This chase was a real pain
with a nice prize at the end. The night before, as we reached our motel in Kansas, I
heard grinding noises beneath my 4Runner and assumed the transmission was chewing itself
to pieces.
I left the Goodland Super 8 at 5:00 AM the next morning, headed for the Toyota dealer in
Hays over 100 miles away. The mechanics found nothing to cause of the metallic
screech from my differential, so I raced back to Colorado and down along the Rocky
Mountains to catch these LP storms on the Front Range, followed by a violent
lightning barrage. The lightning strikes fell in quick bursts all around me, so bright I
had to blink several times to clear my vision more than once.
